Fabric Friday– My Craft Crush

I have a craft crush on my sewing machine.  Yup, that’s what I said.  A few times over the last few months I’ve heard my husband say he had a “man crush” on something.  The generator, a tool…something inanimate.  Well, I figure if he can have a “man crush” on an inanimate object, I can have a craft crush on my sewing machine.  So I do.  And I’m not ashamed to say it.

Earlier this week, I made this ruffled blouse for myself.  I found the fabric on clearance at Walmart for $2.  Yes, I know, it broke my own rules to always buy better quality fabric when possible, but for $2, I thought it was worth it because I wanted to make a test garment of this pattern before I set to work using more expensive fabric.  I began to work, just giddy with myself!!  It turned out wonderfully.  There was however, a small problem.  Or more accurately, a short problem.  I had shortened it too much and had to compensate, so I added an additional ruffle at the bottom.  All in all, I think the modification was a perfect addition!

I was so thrilled with it, that when sweet little A woke up the next morning I just had to share it with her!  Yes, I know, a new level of pathetic-ness, seeking approval from a 5 year old.  But from the way her face lit up, I knew I had done well.  I said, “I have enough fabric left….would you like something too?”  She was delighted at that idea and wanted something that matched.  So the next night I pulled out a very simple pattern for her and added the ruffles all on my own!  And here is where I am especially proud of my diligence….I put in sleeves!!!  Yes!  I did!!  (join me in a happy dance here!)
And thanks to the photographic efforts of my son, here we are together today, in front of a lovely backdrop of garbage cans.  Note to self:  don’t plan photoshoot on garbage day.

I’m working on putting together a list of “tips and tricks for a new seamstress – one self-taught seamstress to another” (sorry to be so old fashioned, but sewer, is well, a yucky thing, and sewwer isn’t a word!)  Stay tuned, maybe next Friday! -

You did a great job with those sleeves. Love the way you're getting so brave and adding some modifications to make the pattern your own. I always love to make mine where people say, "Well, I have that pattern, but it doesn't look like that!" Your sewing progression is reminding me of my mother who never had anyone to teach her anything about sewing. Just grabbed some fabric, scissors, needle and thread and went for it. Later Dad managed to find her an old treadle machine and she was thrilled. I can still remember her sewing on that old machine.
